The Solche book

SOlche geSCHICHTen

The story of the protagonist Menzel paints a dark picture of postmodern people, whose dreams, hopes and questions remain private and repeatedly fall back into the functional security of the prison of everyday life.

Each lyric casts its line of escape only as a shadow over the corresponding story. It is the soundtrack to the small experiences and events of a day between waking and falling asleep: what calls out and remains unheard. Menzel's only spoken insight, “I am the reason”, falls victim, like many other thoughts, to the relentless pressure to take the next step within the functional machinery of work, mobility and machine-like existence.
The 32 stories wind around a dull life and stubbornly refuse to break out, just like their protagonist. Songs and short prose are set against images that sit strangely well between the provocative lyrics and the hopeless stories.

Form

32 song lyrics meet 32 fragments of prose
and 11 pictures by Guido Günther.
An interpretation of the texts closes the book, or opens it up. 93 pages.

Background

The Chemnitz acoustic rock duo Solche were asked so often about their wealth of lyrics and weight of ideas that the idea soon emerged of printing a small book to rescue the songs from the fleeting nature of a concert.

Since dance-music enthusiasts sometimes confessed, “I do not know what it means”, lyricist Holm Krieger added a thematically matching episode to each song. Together, these episodes span a particular day, with the more accessible prose intended to guide the reader onto the right track.
In February 2006, the band independently published 50 copies of the booklet, illustrated by Julia van der Seylberg.

Since August 2007, a revised and expanded edition with pictures by Guido Günther has been available from Eichenspinner Verlag. The next edition was to feature works by a different artist.
